Task 2: Analysis of the music video Kings of Leon - Use somebody By Lukas

Kings of Leon - Use Somebody 

Task 2.1: The song is by Kings of Leon and title of the song is Use somebody. The channel it would be broadcasted is Kerrang but also it can be played on MTV.  The genre of the song is alternate rock. The characteristics of the song is that it is performance based song as you can see the band performing, playing on guitars and singing with the drummer drumming on drums, but it does seem like there are some narrative scenes incorporated as you can see the band acting like they are on tour and getting ready to go live.

 The style of the song is quite quick pace and there are a lot of different footages being used. The music video starts of in a room, there are couple men sitting and some of them have their feet on the table. They are watching television. There is a panoramic view of the City buildings. After this there are couple of aerial shots of the city, there are cars driving on the roads and you can see very tall buildings and all of this is shot at night. This makes the lights more visible and looks very good.

The first time you have a shot longer than 5 seconds is of the singer, there is a dissolve to that scene and there is an extreme close up of his face. There are parts were the only thing you can see is his eyes and some of his face. The eyes do not look at the camera directly. The camera keeps slowly zooming out to show his whole face. 

The editing is quiet fast paced which may show their fast paced lifestyle, and the footage of the seeded up cars and roads which may show their very active lifestyle and that they are always on the road.

The band members are seen, on some occasions, wearing glasses at night and you would not generally wear glasses at night which means that it may be a disguise from fans as they may want to have their normal lives but because of fans and the press make it impossible.

This video is showing the true colours of the life of a musical celebrate that they are always on the road and that they have to hide themselves whenever they are outside as most people think it is glamorous and amazing they may be seeing it is not as glamorous as everyone think it is.

The song is mostly recorded when the band is on tour and it is telling people the real world of 'superstars' as most people think it is really cool to be rich and famous but maybe they are saying that it is not all that amazing.

The band is back stage; it is a black and white footage. they seem to be practicing for a performance but they are also having a good time, they are laughing with one another. This shows the viewer that they are like everyone else; they are down to earth people the only difference between us and them is that they are famous and have a lot of money. 

  

Task 2.2: The CD cover of the song features   

There are a couple of different song/album CD covers but i choose the album cover to analyse as it looked the most interesting.

The song is from the album 'Only by the night' and it was the second song released in the album.

The album cover is quite effective in the fact that it is split into four parts, there are four band members so it features all the band members in the album cover as some covers only include one or at times none. Also each square features that part of the band member's face. For example the bottom left side of the cover features the bottom left part of the (if you would be looking at him) face in that square only, while the other squares features the other parts of the faces of each band member.

On the top right of the cover there is the band’s name in yellow colours with lower dash things to connect each word but also separates it. And on the other side it has the name of the album cover.

There is a red button and it has like an unfinished square which means that something is being recorded.

There are some bird associations as you can see a beak and the hair of the bird. The bird is probably an eagle. An eagle represents power and strength meaning that maybe the band members are powerful and strong to soar above every man that lives with their music. As this image is integrated into the image of the four band members it makes it apparent that they may feel like they are an eagle and this album could be their best soaring above all the other ones.
