Task 2 - Music: The Beginning By Lukas

Music video history

There are three different types of music videos, which are:

1.     Performance based – when the artist sings to the camera.

2.     Narrative based  - when there is a clear storyline within the music video.

3.     Abstract/artistic or animated music videos.   

The beginning

Before music videos the artists had to play the songs on radio and on concerts overt so that the audience would buy the artists song so the Beatles thought of an idea to make a film with all their songs from the album to promote a song. The film was called ‘a hard day’s of night’ which started the experimental phase of music videos.  It was shown in the year 1964 and it was directed by Richard Lester who went to direct the three musketeers and also, went to produce the 1974 superman movie.  The album was released four days after the movie was released.  The song “ a hard day’s night was the first song played and then the song “I should have known better” and the way the they shot this song a lot of other artists shot their songs in this way.  Then they made a sequel to this movie called ”help” which featured all the songs from the next album that they released.  This was the experimental phase of music video industry. 

Then around a decade after a band called “queen” released a song called “bohemian Rhapsody” which was not made into a movie but a official music video that could be played on television. It was released out in 31 October 1975. It is supposed to be one of the most popular songs from 'Queen' and they used many different editing techniques and camera angles  than what the Beatles have done.
