Johnny cash – Hurt
Task 2.1: The song is by Johnny Cash and the song title is Hurt. The channel that the track would be played is Kerrang. The genre of the song falls into rock either alternative, industrial and Gothic. The characteristics of the music video is that it is a performance based as he is lip singing and he has his guitar with him, playing on it. The music video has a lot of different images of fame and religion and there are archive footage of him, it may seem that through this it has some narrative based characteristics incorporated in the music video. As this characteristics link with the song's lyrics. So there is a storyline, it talks about his, and what he has lived through.
At the start you have images of golden statue and a big ball of fruits, the images cut on the beat, then you see Johnny cash dressed in black as he was once called the man in black. You also, have a close up on the guitar of him holding in and this is symbolic as he always played with a guitar.

There is a shot of the American flag that represents freedom; democracy and it could also say that the singer is quite proud of his country, the shot is a medium close up then it cuts to a medium shot. The medium shot shows a museum dedicated to him and you see that it is no longer in use (it is closed) and it must have been open once somewhere in the 1970s when he was really famous but now he is not as famous as he was before. There is a empty museum and there are pictures of johnny cash and a golden record broken and in the past if you got a golden record it meant that you were really good.

There is a line “I remember everything” and at ‘everything’ it cuts to him in the past, with him in a train. There is a scene of him looking at a piano and the piano is closed which could mean that the artist could have finished making music years ago and when he opens it could men that he opens it to make his last song. When he is looking down on it he could be reflecting of his glory days.
There are a lot of close ups of his face and when he sings "Everyone goes away in the end." Then there is a shot of his Mother, he is remembering her as she passed away.
There is a empty museum which was dedicated to him but now it is closed down which shows that even though he was very famous before, now he is not very famous and so they closed it down because not m,any people have been coming to his museum. It is a very big deal if they make a museum about someone famous as you are being recognized as a very good artist. The artist then sings "do you want my empire of dirt" picture of him golden records.
The message behind the video is that it does not matter what physical possessions he may have, he is lonely and does not have anybody. So, once he had everything but now he does not which means that money does not buy you happiness.
Task 2.2: This is the CD cover for this single.
In this CD cover there is a hand of an older man as you can see his wrinkles on his hand. It features the name of the Artist's last name, Cash, the name being at the top, across horizontal. It is fully white and you can see it clearly as the background is quite dark. It only features the artists last name which means that he is very popular, and many people have heard of him so you do not need his first and last name but only his last name. Underneath the letter 'C' in 'Cash' there is there is some text, very dark and it says 'Hurt' and underneath that it says 'Personal Jesus' so it features the name of the song and the other text has some Religious significance.
The CD cover mostly includes an older man's hand, he looks quite old as you can see his wrinkles which may be the artist's hand as they only feature his last name. So he may have earned his credibility over time.
The man has a ring on his second finger form the left. the ring looks like it may be made from gold with Jesus being on the cross in the ring which shows that he is religious through it. This ring links in well with the song as the song has many different religious references.
On the left of the hand there is something there which looks a bit like a white page with black text on it which may be a letter for someone, lyrics for a song or a page out of the Bible as he is religious it would make sense for the man reading the Bible.
